A year of content: 12 months of small business blog ideas for 2026

In this article...

Next to ‘drink more water’ and ‘cut screen time’, do you have a blogging New Year’s resolution this year? Is it ‘seriously, get some blogs on the website already!’?

Mine too!

As absolutely chuffing brilliant as blogs are (waaaay better than social media captions or newsletters) they’re not easy.

Luckily for you, my hardworking and optimistic pal, this blog is gonna help you smash your blogging New Year’s resolution.

Being a newbie at blogging is like being a newbie spin class.

From the outside, it all looks pretty straightforward. Other people are doing it, their pedals go round and round. But, then you’re in the saddle. Your feet are strapped into those pedals. Suddenly it’s all so much harder. There’s a resistance spinner thing, the instructor is shouting instructions, and now you’ve got to stand up and pedal at the same time? And WHAT is that music?

Coming up with blog ideas is like being stuck in an endless 5:30am ‘Intense Total Attack Spin’ Class. Just when you find a topic which highlights who you are, what your business does, how you’re an expert, and promotes what you sell… you gotta find another one. And write it. And edit it. And post it.

Gah, at least you don’t have to blog wearing Lycra.

Since I’m always banging on about how good blogs are, the least I can do is help you.

Mapped out, right here in this blog, is a month by month plan of topics to write about. There are ideas, examples, editable titles, and they’re all ready for you to take, adapt, and make your own.

With my ideas you’ll dial down the intensity of blogging and make it all as manageable as restorative yoga class.

Start here: 4 quick blogging FAQs about small business blogs

ONE: Why do we write and post blogs months in advance?
Supermarkets also play the “promote things way in advance game”. Have you noticed when the school year is coming to an end there are “back to school” signs above the stationery aisles and next to the uniform- style kids’ clothes? Or the moment September 1st arrives there are Hallowe’en decorations on the shelves? Next time you’re doing a big shop, check out what you can see on the supermarket shelves and use that as a sign to get blogging. Curious? I’ve got a blog all about seasonal blogging right here.

TWO: Isn’t it weird to have blogs on my website about Christmas when it’s July?
Nope! What might be weird is posting a Christmas blog on your social media or in your newsletter in July. Post your blog on your website, let Google crawl and index it, and then people can find it when they’re ready. When it’s closer to Christmas (and it feels more seasonally appropriate) promote your blog all over the place. Remember, the joy of evergreen content is that you can refer to the blog every year.

THREE: How does writing and posting the blogs in advance affect Google search?
Google loves it! Well, Google’s not capable of love, so more accurately, “posting blogs months before your audience will be searching for them works well with Google’s timeline and processes”. But, “Google loves it!” is snappier. This whole process can take anything from a couple of days to 6 weeks. So, there’s really no point in writing a blog about your Easter products in April, or even at the end of March. That blog needs to be written in January or February. Here’s why posting in advance is a good idea, according to the ‘three stages of Google Search’:

    • Step 1Crawling: Google downloads text, images, and videos from pages it found on the internet with automated programs called crawlers.
    • Step 2– Indexing: Google analyses the text, images, and video files on the page, and stores the information in the Google index, which is a large database.
    • Step 3– Serving search results: When a user searches on Google, Google returns information that’s relevant to the user’s query.

FOUR: These blog title ideas are great, but what if I don’t really know how to write a blog?
